Crusher Wear Parts Application Profiles

These profiles document the application decisions behind our wear parts: what the feed was, which crusher and part was involved, why the original selection fell short, what was changed, and what the outcome was measured against.

How to Read These Profiles

Each profile describes a real application type and the engineering decision that changed the outcome. We deliberately do not publish customer names, site locations or a single headline percentage, because a wear-life figure taken from one site is not a valid promise for another. The feed material, the crusher setting and the operating hours all move the result.

What these profiles do give you is the reasoning: which wear mechanism was at work, which material property was the limiting factor, and what we changed. That reasoning transfers between sites even when the numbers do not.

Verified field data, references and site photographs are available on request for your region and your application. Ask us for application references.

Extending Jaw Plate Life in Hard Granite Primary Crushing

Profile 01
застосування / Feed Granite and hard rock, feed size up to 600 мм
PE series jaw crusher
Fixed and swing jaw plates
Material Change Mn13 (standard grade) → Mn18Cr2

Problem

Jaw plates were being replaced on a short interval because the feed was far more abrasive than the plant had originally allowed for. The parts were wearing through the tooth profile rather than failing mechanically, so the plant was paying for change-outs driven by wear rate alone.

Solution

The material grade was reviewed against the actual feed rather than the original quotation, and the plates were moved from standard Mn13 to Mn18Cr2. Tooth profile was changed at the same time so that grip and throughput were maintained with the new grade.

Result

Change-out interval extended in comparable granite primary crushing after the grade and profile review. The improvement comes from matching the grade to the real feed, and is measured by the plant against its own operating hours.

Cone Mantle and Bowl Liner Selection for Abrasive Basalt

Profile 02
Дробарка Конусна дробарка, secondary and tertiary stages
Mantle and bowl liner set
Material Change Mn18 → Mn18Cr2

Problem

The plant was experiencing uneven wear across the crushing chamber, with the bowl liner reaching its limit well before the mantle. Chamber geometry and feed distribution were both contributing to the difference in wear rate between the two parts.

Solution

Chamber profile was checked against the original crusher geometry and restored, and the liner set was supplied in Mn18Cr2. Feed distribution across the chamber was reviewed with the plant so that the liners were being used evenly rather than loaded on one side.

Result

Mantle and bowl liner wear brought closer into balance, so the two parts are replaced as a set rather than the bowl liner being changed on its own. Matching the chamber geometry is usually the larger part of this kind of improvement.

Blow Bar Grade Selection for Limestone Impact Crushing

Profile 03
застосування / Feed Вапняк, low silica content
Horizontal shaft impactor (HSI)

Problem

Manganese blow bars were wearing out quickly in limestone. The wear mechanism there is abrasion-dominant with limited impact energy, which is exactly the duty where manganese steel cannot work-harden and its low initial hardness becomes the limiting factor.

Solution

The bars were changed to high chrome Cr26, which delivers 58 – 65 HRC from the start of the campaign rather than relying on work hardening. Rotor balance was maintained by keeping the bars within a matched weight tolerance.

Result

Wear rate reduced substantially compared with manganese bars in the same limestone duty, because the grade now matches the wear mechanism. Bars are matched by weight set so the rotor stays balanced through the campaign.

Hammer Head Wear Life in Cement Clinker Crushing

Profile 04

Problem

Hammer heads were wearing faster than the plant shutdown schedule allowed, which meant either an unplanned stop or accepting a shorter campaign than planned. Manganese steel was also losing hardness because of the elevated temperature in the crushing zone.

Solution

Hammer heads were supplied in high chrome Cr26, which keeps its hardness at elevated temperature and offers far higher abrasion resistance in a low-impact duty. Hammer sets are supplied with matched weight so that rotor balance is preserved.

Result

Wear rate in the clinker duty reduced, allowing the hammer set to be aligned with the plant shutdown schedule rather than forcing an interim stop. Where a plant still has occasional tramp metal events, a tougher grade is recommended instead and the trade-off is discussed openly.

Balancing Toughness and Wear in Reinforced Concrete Recycling

Profile 05
Feed Reinforced demolition concrete, rebar present
HSI / mobile crushing unit
Material Change High chrome blow bars (hardest available grade) → Tougher alloy grade matched to the feed

Problem

Blow bars were failing by cracking rather than wearing out. The plant had selected the hardest available high chrome grade on the assumption that hardness always equals longer life, but the rebar in the feed was delivering impact energy that a brittle material cannot absorb.

Solution

The selection was reversed: because the loss mode was cracking and not wear, a tougher grade was specified instead of a harder one. Feed preparation upstream was also reviewed so that oversized unbroken material reaches the crusher less often.

Result

Bars now reach their wear limit instead of failing early by cracking, so the plant pays for wear rather than for breakage. This is the clearest example of why grade selection has to follow the actual failure mode rather than the hardness number alone.

Mill Liner Selection for Abrasive Grinding Circuits

Profile 06
Feed Abrasive ore slurry, fine grinding
Material Change Manganese steel liners → Mn13Cr2 / chromium-molybdenum alloy steel

Problem

Liners were reaching their limit between mill shutdowns, so relining was starting to drive the shutdown schedule rather than the other way round. Wear in a grinding circuit is largely sliding abrasion with limited impact energy, which is the duty where plain manganese steel is weakest.

Solution

Liner grade was moved to Mn13Cr2 and chromium-molybdenum alloy steel depending on position in the mill, and liner thickness and lifter geometry were reviewed together with the plant so that the grinding profile was maintained as the liners wore.

Result

Relining interval extended so that it fits inside the planned shutdown schedule. Position-by-position grade selection is normally where the gain comes from, since the shell, the ends and the lifter bars do not see the same wear mechanism.

Field Evidence

What We Add to These Profiles Over Time

Written application data is the foundation. Field evidence is what confirms it. These are the materials we add as they become available from customer sites.

📷

Customer Site Photographs

Installation context — the crusher, the chamber and the feed, so it is clear what duty the part is actually working in.

📦

Product and Installation Images

New part as supplied, and the same part in position, including mounting faces and fitment detail.

📈

New vs Used Comparison

The single most useful record for wear parts: the wear pattern at end of life, which shows whether the part wore evenly or failed locally.

🎥

Operating Video

Short footage of the crusher or mill in operation, which helps confirm feed size and material distribution in the chamber.

If you are a current customer and can share end-of-life wear photographs with the operating hours, that record is genuinely valuable to other operators running the same duty — and we will credit the data to your application without publishing your site.
